2024 FOLD Challenge — December

A Book by a Congolese and/or Sudanese Author

For our last reading challenge, we end the year as we began, with the belief in literature’s ability to build bridges, foster empathy, and spark crucial conversations. This month, we’re showcasing books by Congolese and Sudanese writers. They shed light on the experiences of those currently enduring war, displacement, food insecurity, and widespread human rights violations.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been experiencing a civil war; a power struggle between the country’s military-run government and a powerful paramilitary group that has led to the world’s “largest displacement crises” according to the United Nations.

The global quest for “clean energy” means a high demand for natural resources like cobalt which is used to power our devices. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has 75% of the world’s cobalt and right now, the country is in the middle of a humanitarian crisis. As a result of the global demand for cobalt, the people of the DRC have experienced forced evictions, forced labour, and deaths to operate the mines.

These stories by Congolese and Sudanese authors reveal the deep-seated issues of colonial legacies, resource exploitation, and ethnic tensions that underpin the humanitarian crisis affecting the region today. We invite you to pick up these titles and gain a better understanding of Congo and Sudan’s rich cultural histories, their landscapes, and the lives that exist at the centre of these crises.

An enlightening and deliciously witty collection of essays on Blackness, faith, pop culture, and the challenges–and rewards–of finding one’s way in the world, from a BuzzFeed editor and podcast host.

At twelve years old, Elamin Abdelmahmoud emigrates with his family from his native Sudan to Kingston, Ontario, arguably one of the most homogenous cities in North America. At the airport, he’s handed his Blackness like a passport, and realizes that he needs to learn what this identity means in a new country.

Like all teens, Abdelmahmoud spent his adolescence trying to figure out who he was, but he had to do it while learning to balance a new racial identity and all the false assumptions that came with it. Abdelmahmoud learned to fit in, and eventually became “every liberal white dad’s favorite person in the room.” But after many years spent trying on different personalities, he now must face the parts of himself he’s kept suppressed all this time. He asks, “What happens when those identities stage a jailbreak?”

In his debut collection of essays, Abdelmahmoud gives full voice to each and every one of these conflicting selves. Whether reflecting on how The O.C. taught him about falling in love, why watching wrestling allowed him to reinvent himself, or what it was like being a Muslim teen in the aftermath of 9/11, Abdelmahmoud explores how our experiences and our environments help us in the continuing task of defining who we truly are.

With the perfect balance of relatable humor and intellectual ferocity, Son of Elsewhere confronts what we know about ourselves, and most important, what we’re still learning.

The Book of Khartoum: A City in Short Fiction by Bushra al-Fadil and others (Comma Press)

Khartoum, according to one theory, takes its name from the Beja word hartooma, meaning ‘meeting place’. Geographically, culturally and historically, the Sudanese capital is certainly that: a meeting place of the Blue and White Niles, a confluence of Arabic and African histories, and a destination point for countless refugees displaced by Sudan’s long, troubled history of forced migration.

In the pages of this book – the first major anthology of Sudanese stories to be translated into English – the city also stands as a meeting place for ideas: where the promise and glamour of the big city meets its tough social realities; where traces of a colonial past are still visible in day-to-day life; where the dreams of a young boy, playing in his father’s shop, act out a future that may one day be his. Diverse literary styles also come together here: the political satire of Ahmed al-Malik; the surrealist poetics of Bushra al-Fadil; the social realism of the first postcolonial authors; and the lyrical abstraction of the new ‘Iksir’ generation. As with any great city, it is from these complex tensions that the best stories begin.

A gripping multigenerational novel that explores the history and human cost of colonialism in the Congo.

April 1958. When the Brussels World’s Fair opens, Robert Dumont, one of the people responsible for the biggest international event since the end of the Second World War, ends up laying down his arms in the face of pressure from the royal there will be a “Congolese village” in one of the seven pavilions devoted to the settlements. Among the eleven recruits mobilized at the foot of the Atomium to put on a show is the young Tshala, daughter of the intractable king of the Bakuba. The journey of this princess is revealed to us, from her native Kasai to Brussels via Leopoldville, to her forced exhibition at Expo 58, where we lose track of it.

Summer 2004. Freshly arrived in Belgium, a niece of the missing princess crosses paths with a man haunted by the ghost of his father. This is Francis Dumont, professor of law at the Free University of Brussels. A succession of events ends up revealing to them the secret carried by the former deputy commissioner of Expo 58 to his tomb.

From one century to the next, the novel embraces History with a capital “H,” to pose the central question of the colonial can the past pass?

Black Moses is a vital new extension of his cycle of Pointe-Noire novels that stand out as one of the grandest, funniest, fictional projects of our time.
