Description
To kick off the 2024-2025 FOLD Academy season, writer and literary agent Hana El Niwairi joins us to discuss foreign rights and international publishing.
Most writers are often focused on honing their craft, breaking into the industry wherever you reside, or maintaining their publishing career at home. But at some point, you may wonder what else is out there and where else in the world your writing can travel. This workshop is an entry point into the world of international publishing and what is commonly referred to as foreign rights. Come learn about the ways authors may be published in different countries and what that process could look like.
This session will be closed-captioned. Closed captioning provided by Zoom auto transcription.
This session will be followed by a Q&A.

Navigating a Writing Project with Mari Mendoza
Writing can feel like moving through a dark forest without a path. Has anyone done this before? When do I know if it’s done? Why is this taking so long? Sometimes, that disorientation can be helpful and generative. To make something that has never been made before, we need to get lost, forget what we know, and encounter ourselves in new ways. But also — we don’t have to spend the whole trip like that. The creative process moves though some fairly predictable phases, and once we know what they are, we can be more intentional about how we’re making progress, and getting the rest and support we need.
In this interactive talk, we’ll explore those phases, all the way from before draft zero, to sharing our work with the world (which doesn’t need to involve publishing unless we want to.) It will allow writers to locate themselves, own their pace, and remember that they’re not alone. We’re supposed to ask for support and get it. We’ll identify where we thrive, and where we need use a little help to keep things moving. This workshop is for anyone who craves more clarity and less chaos on the big journey of any writing project.
This workshop is presented in partnership with Firefly Creative Writing.
